William "Billy" Floyd Mitchell, 86, passed away on October 29, 2024. He was born in Hopewell, Virginia, to the late Floyd and Chastine Mitchell.

Billy graduated from Hopewell High School in 1956, and Chowan College in 1958. He was the Director of Parks & Recreation for 29 years, was on the West End Christian School Board for 30 years, and was a lifelong member of West End Presbyterian Church. He was the voice of Hopewell High School sports for over 20 years and was instrumental in merging Mathis Field to Crystal Lake Park, which is why Mitchell's Crossing Bridge is named after him. Billy received the "Jaycee's Outstanding Young Man" award for 2 years in a row. He had a love for the Lord and his family. He was a humble, wise, and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his church and the youth in his city, and was a pillar in the community. He will be missed by all who knew him.
