Vida May Colby, 89, of South Chesterfield, Virginia, passed away on June 14, 2026.
Born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Earle and Katherine Crowell. She carried her New England roots with her when she moved to Virginia later in life, where she spent the remainder of her years surrounded by family and friends.
She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: her daughter, Helen Williams; her grandchildren, Jarrod Williams and Elizabeth McMullen; her great-grandchildren, Savannah Williams, Samantha Williams, Ayden McMullen, Charlie McMullen, and William "Carter" McMullen; her sisters, Gail Smagula, Kay Grasso, and Loretta Clemens; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Though preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Cara Williams, she carried her memory alive in her heart, always.
She also was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Frank W. Colby, and several beloved family members and friends.
Vida found joy in both people and life's simple pleasures. An avid reader throughout her life, she loved knitting, spending time with family, and searching for a bargain she simply couldn't pass up. She never felt the need to follow every passing trend, preferring instead the values and common sense that had guided her through life. Her faith in God was an important part of her life and brought her comfort throughout the years.
Her genuine laugh could brighten a room, and her words often carried the kind of wisdom that comes only from experience. She will be remembered for her love of family, her independent spirit, and her ability to make people feel at home simply by being herself. Those who knew and loved her will deeply miss her bright spirit and the joy she brought to their lives. More than anything, she treasured the time spent with those she loved.
In keeping with Vida's wishes, no formal funeral or memorial service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory may make a donation to their local library, charity, or organization of their choice.
