Sylvia "Sib" Louise White Baucom went to be with our LORD on July 15, 2026, at the age of 88.
Sib was born on July 9, 1938, and raised in Wadesboro, North Carolina, where she was active in her community and high school. She was athletic—a cheerleader and basketball player—and a good friend to so many classmates.
She met her husband William Douglas "Doug" Baucom when they were both young. Doug joined the Marines and then moved into the Air Force, and that was the start of many adventures. Coming from a small town, they were excited to travel and see the world. They served tours of duty in Germany, Hawaii, Florida, Greece, and Maryland. When Doug retired from the military, they settled in Virginia, living in Tidewater and finally in Chester, Virginia.
Sib worked in many different roles, and once they settled in Virginia, she worked for the school systems, eventually retiring from Salem Middle School. She made many friends along the way, from her “River Rats” crew to her retired school system friends. She was active in her church, St. Matthews, which was very important to her, and she had many cherished friends there as well.
She found much joy in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to play games with the family kids and was known to sneak an extra card or two into her hand and then allow herself to be discovered, to the joy and laughter of everyone. And her happy place was the beach; she loved being with family at the beach.
We are sure she is now with the LORD and has joined her beloved husband, Doug; her grandson, William Blake Baucom; her parents, John Holmes White Jr. and Kathryn Clontz White Shelton; and her brother, John Homes White III.
She is survived by her two children, Katheryn Baucom Curtis (Chris) and Mike Baucom (Kristy); four grandchildren, Whitney Curtis, Kelly Baucom Smith (Chase), Matthew Baucom, and Reilly Baucom; and 3 great-grandchildren, Brooke Smith, Hunter Smith, and Brinleigh Mason.
The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to all the caregivers that supported Sib in her final years; they were a blessing to her and to her family.
There will be a small private service at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Chester, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Matthews Episcopal Church: 11919 Beach Road, Chesterfield, Va. 23838. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com
