Stephen Skroback, 97, of Columbia, South Carolina and formerly of Alexandria, IN, died Wednesday evening, June 15, 2016 in the Pruitt Nursing Home in Blythewood, South Carolina. Steve was born in Greensville County, Virginia on January 31, 1919 to Paul and Julia (Matecska) Skroback. He married his high school sweetheart, Olive W. Smith July 3, 1941 and enjoyed 68 years of marriage. Steve started working for Johns-Manville in Jarrett, VA before entering the Army for his 2 year stint in Germany and Austria during WWII. After he returned he went back to Johns-Manville. This career with JM took him from Jarrett, VA, to Natchez, MS and finally on to Alexandria, IN where he retired. Steve was a former member of The Lutheran Church of Our Blessed Savior in Alexandria. He worked with the American Red Cross Disaster Services aiding victims of hurricanes and tornadoes. This took him to Hawaii, Puerto Rico and other areas around the United States. In his free time he enjoyed bowling, golf, card games and spending his winters in Punta Gorda, FL. He is survived by 2 of his 3 children, Douglas Skroback (U-Yong) of Blythewood, SC and Kathryn Poe (Fred) of Mesquite, TX. He had 5 grandchildren, Aaron Skroback (Sandy) of Crescent City, CA, Gregory Sparks (Nikki) of Rowlett, TX, Kimberly Uhlenhaker (Doug) of Frisco, TX. Brian Skroback (Chelsie) of Twin Falls, ID; and his “adopted” grandson, Lee Friend (Ashley) of Mobile, AL. He was blessed to have 9 great-grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his son, Thomas Skroback, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Paul Skroback (Mary), John Skroback (Retha), and Ben Skroback (Mildred) and 6 sisters, Julia Race (Steve), Rose Luck, Elizabeth Chovan (Dan) and 3 that died in infancy. He was loved and will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Steve will be laid to rest next to his wife and close to his son. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell, VA.
