Ruth Nester Elliott

Ruth Nester Elliott, born Ruth Elizabeth Young, went to be with her Lord on December 5, 2024, at the age of 92. She passed peacefully, in her sleep at home, after struggling with dementia. Born on July 11, 1932, in Radford, VA, she married Howard E. Nester, had three sons, and moved to Hopewell, VA, where she worked at Allied Chemical. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Ruth was a long-time member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, where she played the piano for many years, as well as, the organ upon occasion, although she preferred the piano. In her final years, Ruth enjoyed her trips to the mountains to sit and watch the rafts on the Shenandoah River, to Atlantic Beach, where she loved the surf and people-watching from the deck, and especially car rides to get a milkshake or ice cream cone. She liked going out to eat but only if the restaurant was brightly colored and full of people for her to watch, or if the whole family was with her.

The only daughter of Tom and Clara Young, she was preceded in death by her parents; and five brothers, Herman, Bill, Winfred, Clifton, and Milton; her husband, Howard E. Nester; and her second husband, Richard Elliott.

Ruth is survived by her sons and their spouses, Joseph M. Nester (Hazel), Howard "Mike" Nester (Barbara), and Timothy W. Nester; grandchildren, Michael Todd Nester (Debra), Joseph E. Nester (Deborah), James M. Nester (Amanda), Stephanie Mullins (Tony), Jason P. Nester, and Terry Nester (Michelle); great-grandchildren, Dylan Nester, Drake Nester, Casey Mullins, Landon Mullins, Ryder Mullins, Lexy Nester, Taylor Nester, Kelly White, Kayla Nester, Madigan Johnson, and Logan Johnson; plus numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A viewing will be held at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, at 12:30 PM, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, followed by the service at 1 PM. Interment will be held at Bermuda Memorial Park.

Mom, Grandma, Ruth will be so missed by those who loved her. RIP Sweetheart.
