It is with great sadness for our family that we announce the passing of Ruby Blankenship Wellington on March 27, 2025, at the age of 79, after succumbing to various chronic health issues and complications. While our hearts are broken, we take great comfort and rejoice knowing that she is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior, completely healed and whole.
Ruby was born on May 28, 1945 in Pearisburg, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Fulton Virgil Blankenship and Ruby Dot Wyrick Blankenship. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Wellington; and sisters, Flora Pyles and Shirley Shell.
After she graduated from Giles County High School, she worked for both the cities of Pearisburg and Hopewell, Virginia. She eventually worked for the Department of Social Services as an Eligibility Supervisor. She retired after 30+ years of service. Her work ethic and character were impeccable and made a lasting impact on all her coworkers.
Ruby chose to spend her time serving her family and friends or anyone in need. If you were a recipient of one of her delicious meals, then you knew she was an exceptional cook! She had the gift of hospitality and was an incredible host. Ruby enjoyed traveling all over the country to see family members and friends. She was always up for an adventure, whether it was white water rafting, horse back riding, train rides around the countryside, hikes to see waterfalls, or zip lining with her granddaughter. She spent countless hours in her kitchen doing what she loved - cooking. She also spent a great deal of time tending her gorgeous flower gardens. She was a faithful and dedicated member of City Point Restoration Church where she enjoyed serving. She loved her Pastor and church family dearly.
Ruby's name was divinely suited for her as she was a precious jewel. Her unwavering love for her family and friends, her servant's heart, passion for the lost, her faith, her witness, her generosity, her strength, her compassion for people, and her love for Jesus and Christlikeness have impacted the lives of generations. To know her was to love her! She leaves a tremendous legacy of faith as a follower of Jesus and it serves as a challenge to all to follow after Christ.
Left to continue her legacy are her children, Paul Allen Powell, Jr. (Susie), Angie Powell Burroughs (Mike), Carla Wellington Jones (Dean), Eric Wellington, and Ryan Wellington; grandchildren, Lindsey Archer (Billy), Olivia Powell, Seth Powell, Lauren Burroughs, Hannah Powell Haywood (Jordan), Madison Wellington, Zachary Burroughs (Mary), Emma Powell, and Jennifer Mattes (Cody); great-grandchildren, Lucy Wright, Connor Pead, Lucas Pead, Parker Burroughs, and Amara Haywood; brothers, Virgil Blankenship, Bob Blankenship, and Billy Blankenship; and sister, Margie Blankenship Balthis.
The family will receive friends and family from 6pm - 8pm, on Friday, April 4th, 2025, at City Point Restoration Church, 2300 Bluefield St., Hopewell, Va 23860. A celebration of life service will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 5th, 2025, at City Point Restoration Church. Interment service will follow immediately after service at Bermuda Memorial Park.
