Roy William Smid, 76, died at Southside Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. He was born on October 7, 1949, to the late William V. and Eleonore (Mecklenburg) Smid in Fayetteville, N.C. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Earl Wayne Smid; and a sister, Diane Smid-Ogburn.
Roy attended Petersburg High School, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969 to 1973, including a tour in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief. He was a master plumber and owned and operated Smid's Plumbing and Sewer Service from 1981 until 1998, when ill health forced him to retire. He enjoyed his profession and had a strong work ethic. He loved his family more than anything and took pride in providing for them. An avid outdoorsman, Roy loved hunting, fishing, and boating while his health permitted. He was gregarious and witty, his personality took over the room, and he never met a stranger. He delighted in telling his (embellished) stories to engage and entertain others.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Linda (Pierson) Smid; his two adoring daughters, Elaine Renee Smid and Teresa Lynn Smid; a brother, Donald R. Smid; sister-in-law, Corinne W. Smid; one nephew, Jessie Smid (Stephanie); nieces, Brittany Wilson (Bobby), Patience Pierson, Haley Humphrey (Brian), Molly Pierson, Cayce Baierski (Sam Oueilhe), Ashley MacEachern (Max), Kara Evans (Andrew), and Lisa Bonjernoor; as well as eight great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Second Baptist Church, Petersburg, at 2pm, on Saturday, December 13, 2025, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to K9s for Warriors.
