Rosa Louise Lane Sober lived to be 91 years old. She was born on January 4, 1935, in Ayden, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Ervin Lane and Rosa Florence Bennett Lane; her husband of 53 years, Eugene Flexon Sober, Sr.; her five brothers, James Andrew Lane (LaTrelle), Lee Tilmon Lane (Elizabeth), Raymond Earl Lane (Helen), Leamond Earnest Lane (Bessie, Mary, Marion), and Ervin Jackson Lane; her daughter, Teresa Louise Sober Collins; her grandson, Jonathan Alan Weston; and son-in-law, Walter Merritt.
She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Smith Weston (Rodney) and Dorothy (Dottie) Smith Merritt; 4 grandchildren, Matthew Stephen Weston (Christine), Laura Merritt Fretz (David), Michael Collins (Sarah), and Trenton Collins (Samantha); and 7 great-grandchildren, Colby, Madison and Sydney Weston, Brett, Trey, Logan and Bryan Collins; and one sister-in-law, Doris Lane. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, family and friends - especially Janice and Mark Sober, Debra Reason, Frances Campbell, and Brenda Livingston.
Louise's childhood was spent growing up on a farm in Ayden and Greenville, NC. She left after high school to move to Virginia to work at the National Allied Chesterfield Plant, where she worked for 30 years and retired as an A.M.T. Instructor. After retirement, she enjoyed moving to Surry, VA for several years before moving back to Hopewell. She loved crocheting, sewing, and making numerous crafts.
Louise was a member of First Congregational Church, lifetime member of VFW Post 639, and the American Legion Unit 146, where she served as a 2nd (past) Vice President.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 23rd, 2026 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 West Broadway Avenue, Hopewell, VA 23860. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Hopewell Chapel.
The family would like to thank Crater Hospice for their outstanding support they have provided to our family especially Rachel, Tracee, Amy, Haleigh, and Janet (volunteer), during our mother's illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. James Catholic Church, Building Fire Fund, 510 West Poythress Street, Hopewell, VA 23860.
