Robert Eugene Yarbrough, Jr., a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at TriCities Hospital in Hopewell, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. He was 72 years old.
Born in Sacramento, California, Robert proudly served in the United States Air Force, where he demonstrated his commitment to duty and country. Following his military service, he dedicated an impressive 36 years to working as a security officer, earning the respect and admiration of those he worked alongside.
Robert was a devoted family man, married to his cherished wife, Virginia "Sue" Yarbrough, for 40 wonderful years. Together, they created a warm and loving home in Hopewell, Virginia, where they raised their daughter, Rachel Yarbrough. Robert's love extended beyond his immediate family; he was a caring uncle to his nieces, Melissa and Jessica Goodman, and his nephew, Delmer Chandler, Jr.
Robert is survived by his wife, Virginia "Sue" Yarbrough; daughter, Rachel Yarbrough (Steve Fotis); his cousin, Jan Motes (Dave); sister-in-law, Gloria Chandler; along with cherished friends, William J. Goodman, Ann and Fred Bohlander, Ben and Melanie Marks, Melissa Taylor, and Kirsten Ferguson. He leaves behind many other relatives and friends who cherished him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Hilda Moon and Robert Eugene Yarbrough Sr.; as well as his siblings, Jack T. Yarbrough, Clyde D. Yarbrough, and Betty "Jewell" Yarbrough. He was also preceded in death by his nephew, Eric L. Chandler; and his in-laws, Virley W. Chandler and Georgia M. Chandler; along with brothers-in-law, Virley Chandler, Jr. and Delmer Chandler Sr; and sister-in-law, Hildaguard Dias.
A true lover of history, Robert found joy in reading and sharing stories with those around him. His passion for knowledge and his unwavering love for his family defined his life. He was always there for his loved ones, ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.
Robert's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, in honor of Robert's love for reading and to help keep the joy of literature alive, the family requests that donations be made to the Appomattox Regional Library- Hopewell Branch.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell, VA. The family is being served by the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
