Robert Sloan Carlon, Sr., of Prince George, Virginia, passed away on September 26, 2024. Born in Hopewell, Virginia, in 1938, he was the son of the late Frank A. Carlon, Sr. and Virginia Sloan Carlon Newton. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his sister, Alice S. Carlon; and his stepfather, the Reverend Canon Sherman S. Newton.
Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ellen Riggins Carlon; his brother, Frank A. Carlon, Jr., and his wife, Petra; and his stepsister, Marilyn N. Juergens and her husband, Richard. He is also survived by his son, Robert S. Carlon, Jr.; his daughter, Gail C. Ridgeway and her husband, Barry; his grandchildren, Lauren and Adam Ridgeway; his sister-in-law, Amy R. Johnson; and his niece, Angela Carlon.
Bob grew up in Hopewell, and graduated from Hopewell High School in 1956, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, in 1963. He also honorably served in the U.S. Army in Stuttgart, Germany.
Bob spent most of his career in banking, retiring from SunTrust Bank after more than 30 years of service. Although Bob was a banker by day, his passion was farming. He and his wife moved to a farm in Prince George in 1971. After his retirement from banking, he became a full-time farmer. He actively farmed until 2019, when he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
He was a long-time member of Merchants Hope Church, serving multiple terms on its Vestry. He enthusiastically supported the preservation of the historic church. At the time of his death, he was serving as President of the Merchants Hope Church Foundation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Merchants Hope Church or the Merchants Hope Church Foundation, 11500 Merchants Hope Rd., N. Prince George, VA 23860, or Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Rd., Petersburg, VA 23805.
A memorial service will be held at Merchants Hope Church, on October 14, 2024, at 2:00PM, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
