Robert Joe Bailey, 80, a longtime resident of Petersburg, VA, died May 5, 2025, in Waverly, VA, after an extended period of declining health. He was born January 23, 1945, in Raleigh County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Amos Bailey and Fay Elizabeth Salyers.
He was affectionately known as Pop, Dad, and Daddy, as well as "Bobby" to family and friends; and to his pride and joys of life, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was known as "horseshoe pawpaw."
He leaves to cherish his five children, Bobby Joe Bailey (Teresa), Tammy B. Varney (fiancé Bob Jones II), Terry L. Bailey (Rose), David W. Bailey, all of Dinwiddie, VA, and Timmy A. Bailey, of Chatham, VA; eight grandchildren, Meagan Bailey, Ted Duda III, Kristina Bailey, Brittany Brown (Trey), Joshua A. Bailey (Alicia), Jessi Bailey, Brandy Nisewonger (John), and Thomas Bailey; and fourteen great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews who hold dear memories; and an extended family in West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Ohio.
He had a lifelong career in the transportation field and enjoyed mechanic work.
He enjoyed fishing, shooting pool, throwing horseshoes, and sharing the gospel with friends and family. More than anything, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and shared his love of music and dancing and throwing horseshoes.
A special thank you to Owen Waggoner and his wife, Teresa, of Hopewell, for their friendship, support, and compassion over the last nine years. May you know, forever, you became a heart brother to him and a special friend to the family.
The family would like to thank At Home Care Hospice, Colonial Heights, and Crater Community Hospice for their service over the years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 3 p.m., at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with Pastor Rocky Shearin of Calvary's Love Ministries officiating.
