Peggy Herring

Apr 12, 1933 — Aug 26, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peggy Herring, of Chester, Virginia, who departed this life on August 26, 2026. Born and raised in Martinsville, Virginia, Peggy was a beloved southern belle who cherished her southern heritage and was known for her warm spirit, infectious laughter, and love of a good joke.

Peggy was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 63 years, Carroll "Buck" Watts Herring; her parents, David and Grace Hensley; her granddaughter, Savannah Herring; her grandson; Jonathan Lipchak; and five siblings; Dorothy, Emily, Hazel, Dick, and Hope.

She is survived by her sister, Grace Taylor; six children: Rebecca Lipchak (David), Katherine Vaden, Donna Carol Winship, Ann Leveto (Shawn), David Herring (Connie), and James Herring (Christina). Peggy also leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Susannah, Russell, Ashley, Cameron, Adrian, Alex, Greg, Robert, Kailey, Madison, and Austin, as well as many great-grandchildren; and her devoted cats, Max and SheBear.

An active member of the Chester Baptist Church, Peggy shared her love of music as a choir member and made significant contributions as one of the first women deacons at Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Petersburg. Her dedication to service extended to her professional life, where she worked as the church secretary at Chester United Methodist Church and served as the library assistant at Westview Elementary School in Petersburg. In this time of mourning, we remember Peggy as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose spirit will forever remain in our hearts.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Chester Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Great Hall at the church. A private committal service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville, VA. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate her extraordinary life, recount fond memories, and honor her remarkable legacy.
