Newton L. "Sonny" Clements, Jr.

Newton L. "Sonny" Clements, Jr., of Petersburg, VA, passed away on June 24, 2026, at the age of 98. He was born to the late Mary and Newton Clements, Sr. on May 16, 1928. In February of 1946, Sonny joined the U.S. Navy and served his country in WWII. In addition to his parents, Sonny is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Joyce Clements; his sister, Elizabeth Summers; and his brother, Gilbert Clements. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Lorna (Don) Cornett; son, Lyndon Clements; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral for Sonny will be held at 12:00pm on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the funeral, from 11:00am to noon, at the church. Interment will follow the funeral in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery. The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sonny's honor to the SPCA of Petersburg and Colonial Heights.
