Nettie Alice Covey Shelburne, age 83, of Hopewell, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Born August 1, 1932 in Snowville, Virginia, she grew up as the only surviving child born to the late Jeremiah Houseman Covey and Gladys Marie Moseley Covey, both of Graysontown, Virginia. She was predeceased by her late husband of 50 years, Eli Bently Shelburne, Sr., a great-grandson, Joshua Alan Davis, a daughter-in-law Laura Lee Nanney Shelburne, a grandson, William John Shelburne and a granddaughter, Claire Aven Shelburne. Our meek, selfless, generous, kind, gentle, tireless, sweet, loving and “somewhat shy” mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother is survived by her best friend for the past 14 years, William B. (Billy) Harper of Hopewell, one daughter, Ella Marie (Sissy) Shelburne McWhirt of Grand Island, Florida; five sons, Eli Bentley (Benny) Shelburne, Jr. of Colonial Heights, Lewis Edward (Ozzie) Shelburne, Sr. of Chester, Jerry Benson (JB) Shelburne of Chester, Franklin Delano (Del) Shelburne of North Chesterfield, and Terry Neal Shelburne of Bon Agua, Tennessee; Four daughters-in-laws, Brenda Shelburne, Veronica (Ronnie) Collins, Pam Shelburne and Elizabeth (Betsy) Shelburne; two sons-in-law, Raymond Collins and Phil McWhirt; 13 grandchildren, Kimberley Dawn Shelburne Denny, Ashley Marie Shelburne Pardoe, Lewis Edward (Eddie) Shelburne, Jr., Amanda Joy (Mandy) Shelburne Fleenor, Lindsey Taylor Shelburne Lipsey, Sandra Shea (Sandy) Shelburne Hudson, Derek Benson Shelburne, Justin Bradley Shelburne, Heather Lynn Shelburne Davis, Amy Nicole Shelburne Mason, April Dawn Shelburne Aiken, Cassie Marie McWhirt and Abel Joseph Shelburne; 19 great-grandchildren, Savannah Lynn Pardoe, Sloane Aubrey Shelburne, Sawyer Horne Shelburne, Justin Fleenor, Aliton Covey Fleenor, Madison Grace Fleenor, Jansen Blaine Hudson, Hunter Ashton Hudson, Logan Dale Hudson, Travis William Hudson, Trevor Christian Hudson, Joseph Bradley Shelburne, Jackson Ray Shelburne, Elijah Alan Davis, Seth Nial Davis, Luke Benson Davis, Jordan Isaiah Mason, Trenton Marcus Aiken and Cassie Marie McWhirt; cousins Dorothy Ann Moseley Sanchez of Christiansburg, Alleen Boyd of Chester and Patsy Boyd of North Carolina; and an extremely large host of dear friends. Our mother was a stay-at-home-mom, loved her family and had said numerous times, “I hate lying!” She was a 60-year member of the Hopewell church of Christ, where her late husband had served as an elder. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 21st at the J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home 820 W. Broadway Ave. Hopewell, VA. The funeral will be at the Hopewell church of Christ at 4th Avenue & Cawson Street in Hopewell, VA, at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 22nd, officiated by Mr. Adam Davis and Mr. Mural Worthey. Interment will follow at Bermuda Memorial Gardens in Chester. The family wishes to thank Dr. Will Voelske and his staff at the Virginia Cancer Center, the wonderful staff at Hospice of VA and the many family and friends who extended many acts of kindness and encouragement over the last several months.
