Nedd D. Mockler, age 91, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away on March 5, 2026. He was born on November 29, 1934 in Los Angeles, California, and lived a life defined by service, dedication, and deep devotion to family.
Nedd was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Barbara T. Mockler, who passed away on February 7, 2007; his parents, Robert D. Mockler and Cecil L. Kinraide Mockler; his sister, Susan Incerto; and two sons-in-law, John McKinney and Thomas Nuckoles. Their lives and influence remained an important part of his story.
Nedd pursued higher education with dedication, graduating from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He went on to further his education by earning a Master's degree from the University of Nebraska; accomplishments that laid the foundation for his distinguished professional life.
Nedd proudly served in the United States Air Force, retiring in August 1977 after 20 years of distinguished service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, a devastating 9.2 magnitude earthquake struck the area. Serving as Officer of the Day, Nedd was tasked with evacuating the hospital, an effort that resulted in zero casualties. For his extraordinary leadership, he received Accommodation and was recognized in the Congressional Record for his actions.
Following his military retirement, Nedd began a second 20-year career as an Account Manager for Medical Information Systems, during which time he helped design and install the first computerized medical information system at MCV/VCU, a system that remained in use until it was decommissioned several years ago.
His final career was with Legacy Station in Lilburn, Georgia, where he was able to fully enjoy his lifelong love of model trains, combining work with one of his greatest passions.
He is survived by his 5 children: Kyle McKinney (Joel), Karen Ballard (Jeffrey), Kathryn Nuckoles, Kimberly Ganzert, and Kelly Mockler (Angela).
He was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren: Matthew Eckman (Lexie), Christopher Davis, Jessica Weldon (Brad), Erika Stephens (Paul), Adam Ballard, Carrie Hibbard (Michael), Jordan Firebaugh (Patrick), Michael Pacelli, Joseph Pacelli (Erin), Jonah Mockler, Cody Mockler, Faith Mockler, and Jocelyn Mockler.
He was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Benjamin, Elaina, Emily, Kaitlyn, Adalyn, Bradley, Gracelynn, Morgan, Haven, Oliver, Isla Jean, Landon, and Colton.
Nedd is survived by his siblings, Peter Kugler, Paul Kugler, and Nancy Dyer; and is also lovingly remembered by his nieces, Kathrine Whitacre and Kristine Fisette.
Nedd will be remembered for his integrity, leadership, intellect, and unwavering commitment to family and service. His legacy lives on through the many generations who were proud to call him husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
