Natalie Latt Deadwyler

July 4, 1921 — March 21, 2013

Natalie (“Nan”) Latt Deadwyler, 91, of Hopewell VA passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday evening, March 21, 2013. Her oldest son, Bill (“Chips”) Deadwyler was with her. She had been in hospice care since January. She was born on July 4, 1921, in Queens, New York City to Betty Ann Bogan Latt and Bernard Latt, recent immigrants from Russia. In 1943, when she was serving as a registered nurse in the Army Nurse Corps in the New York region, she met and married William H. Deadwyler, Jr., a newly commissioned artillery officer. In their wedding photograph, both have lieutenant bars on their shoulders. As a career Army wife, she raised four sons in various stations in the States and abroad (Okinawa, Germany, and Taiwan). Upon her husband’s retirement, they settled down in Hopewell, Va., where she was noted for being an avid reader and cook. She especially enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She cultivated her green thumb as a skillful Master Gardener, and refined her flower arrangement talents as a member and officer of Ikebana of Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, by two of her sons, Robert J. and Scott C. Deadwyler, by her sister Cynthia L. McGraw, and by her second husband John Fulgham. Among her surviving relations are her sons William H. Deadwyler, III and his wife Connie, and John B. Deadwyler and his wife Diane. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren (Emily, Gabriel, and Rupa; Mark and Eric; Charis and Jason), and eleven great-grandchildren. Clarissa, her constant canine companion, will miss her too. The family thanks Right at Home and Crater Community Hospice for their dedicated care of Natalie. In late spring, a special gathering will take place in the Hopewell area for friends and relations to remember and celebrate her life. Condolences may be registered online at www.jtmorriss.com .
