Michael D. Tavel, born on October 30, 1958, in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, passed away on January 10, 2026, in Petersburg, Virginia. A dedicated professional, Michael served as a Class 1 Wastewater Operator at the South Central Virginia Wastewater Authority (SCWWA), culminating a career enriched by his earlier work in road maintenance with the highway department during the 1980s. He took great pride in his contributions to the wastewater treatment industry, earning certifications as a Class 1 Wastewater Operator and a Class 3 Water Operator.
Michael was a devoted family man, deeply cherishing time spent with his wife, Pamula Tavel, and their children, Joseph Bragg and his wife, Melissa Bragg, and Chelsea Webber and her husband, Travis Webber. His legacy is further carried on by his beloved grandchildren, Victoria, Caleb, Logan, Aveleen, and Jasper Bragg, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his sister, Jan Bennett; and nieces, Jennifer Johnson, Hannah Farley, and their children.
An avid outdoorsman, Michael found peace and happiness in fishing, boating, walking, and biking. He relished vacationing at the beach, making cherished memories with family and friends. His love for life was reflected in the moments he shared with his grandchildren, whether it was teaching them about the outdoors or simply enjoying playful days together. Michael's spirit will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Tavel & Esther Tavel.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A service will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel, with the interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.
