On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, Michael F. Smith, known by many as Smitty, passed away after a difficult cancer diagnosis. He is survived by his son, Stephen Smith; two grandsons, Colin and Brayden; sister, Patricia (Dan) Bronson; his stepsister, Patti Ellington; as well as many friends, cousins, aunts, nieces, and nephews.
As a young man, Michael enlisted in the army and served his country until he was 22, discharged in 1971. Michael's career included decades of work at Allied Signal Chemical, following in the footsteps of his father, Lewis Smith. He took early retirement at the age of 56, which allowed him to spend more time outdoors, doing what he loved best - hunting deer, quail, and wild turkey. He loved to show everyone around him pictures of his success and was very proud of his sister's skill in the woods, too.
If you had a chance to catch up with Michael over the years, you would have met his best friend, a shih tzu mix named Muffin, who went everywhere with him for many years.
A funeral service for Michael will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Appomattox Cemetery. The service will be presided over by his cousin, Reverend Nancy Stanton McDaniel.
