In Loving Memory of Merlin Mavis Mitchell
Merlin Mavis Mitchell, born Marilyn Dennis on April 11, 1939, in St. Catherine, Jamaica, peacefully passed away on May 24, 2026, at the age of 87.
Merlin was born to the late Ethel and Alexander Dennis. From a young age, she was driven by ambition and a deep desire to care for others. At the age of 20, she pursued her passion for nursing and moved to England to continue her education. While living in England, she married, and welcomed her two sons, Gary and Paul.
She later moved to New York City, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree and served honorably as an Army Reserve Nurse, receiving an Honorable Discharge. Merlin dedicated her professional life to nursing, serving in multiple hospitals as a nursing supervisor before retiring as the Assistant Director of Nursing at Metropolitan Hospital in New York. During her years in New York, she welcomed her daughter, Marcia, and built a rich and meaningful life through her faith and active involvement in her church community. Her commitment to service extended beyond her profession, touching the lives of countless people through her kindness, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to others.
In her free time, Merlin enjoyed reading, sewing, baking, volunteering, and participating in the Lions Club, where she was a devoted member. She took great pride in her nursing career and remained passionate about helping others throughout her life. After retirement, Merlin relocated to Chester, Virginia, where she continued to enjoy fellowship within her church community and embraced the peaceful life she created for herself.
In addition to her parents, Merlin was preceded in death by her siblings, Gloria Smith, Renford Riley, Kenneth Dennis, and Pearla Neufville.
She leaves behind her beloved children, Gary Mitchell, Paul Mitchell, and Marcia Mitchell; her cherished grandchildren, Tiara Mitchell, Gary Mitchell Jr., and Myles Mitchell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.
To know Merlin was to know grace, intelligence, ambition, independence, and most importantly, compassion. Her strength, wisdom, and unwavering love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her legacy of service, faith, and devotion to family will continue to inspire generations to come.
A funeral service celebrating Merlin's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Chester United Methodist Church, officiated by Reverend Nathan Decker. A repast will follow the service at the church. Interment will be held at a later date at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, New York.
In recognition of her distinguished nursing career, a tribute will be rendered by the Nurses Honor Guard. Military honors will also be provided in recognition of her honorable service as an Army Reserve Nurse.
The family is being served by the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
