Melva S. Sloat, 67 of Hopewell, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday June 12, 2016. She was born on January 25, 1949 to the late Walter S. and Katie White Shelton. She had a successful career with the IRS, and retired after 25 years of dedicated service. Melva had many accomplishments throughout her life, but what she was most proud of were her children and grandchildren. Her love for them was her strength and motivation. She met and married her wonderful husband Bill in 2009, whom she cherished. Their love and support for one another was immeasurable. Melva treasured her family and drew her strength from their love, but it could never compare to the amount of strength she gave them. She will forever be our hero! AH-ITE-DEN. Melva is survived by her loving husband Bill Sloat; her children, Brian Braswell and his wife, Susan, Lisa Chapman and her husband, Scott, Dana Palmer and her partner, Stephanie, Samuel Sloat, Dianna Sloat; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, David Shelton; sisters, Donna Sheally, Betty Gerardi, Trisha Stiltoner, Trina Holmstrand, Rebecca Smith; countless nieces, nephews, and other extended family and special friends. A celebration of life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2016 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
