Mary Seward Harris, 94, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk. She was the wife of the late Robert Oliver Harris and the daughter of the late William E. and Annie Savedge Seward. She was a life long resident of Surry County. Mrs. Harris was a life long member of Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church where she faithfully served her church in many capacities. She was a teacher of the Junior and Intermediate departments for approximately 20 years and later served as teacher of the adult ladies Sunday School class; and she was very active in the W.M.U. and mission program of the church.
Mrs. Harris was the first full-time secretary of the Surry County Sheriffâ??s Department where she worked until retiring from the department after 14 years of service. After retiring from the Sheriffâ??s Department, she served as hostess and tour guide at Smithâ??s Fort Plantation. She was a former member of the Association for the Preservation of the Virginia Antiquities and a member of the Surry County Historical Society.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Robert Harris and David O. Harris; two grandsons, Charles Matthew Harris and Jonathan R. Harris; three nieces, two nephews, three nieces in law, two nephews in law, and one sister in law, Elizabeth H. Goodrich. She was predeceased by two sisters, Alma S. Lane and Louise S. Gwaltney; one brother, William E. Seward, Jr.
A funeral service will be held at Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 2:00 pm with burial in Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. The service will be conducted by Rev. Danny Blalock and Rev. Ray Rowland. The family will receive friends at the Wakefield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Mooreâ??s Swamp Church Cemetery fund in care of Janet T.
