Mary Katherine LaVance Barnette

Mary Katherine LaVance Barnette, 69, passed away on December 17, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on November 13, 1956, in Augusta, Georgia, Mary K was raised in Colonial Heights, Virginia, and spent most of her life in Hopewell, where she became known not just by name, but by spirit.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Vernon Ryland Barnette, Jr.; her brother, Gordon LaVance; and her parents, Violet and Arthur LaVance.
She is survived by her daughter, Reva Marie Barnette; her grandchildren, Destiny Davis, Madeline King, and Ryland Pennington; and her brother, William LaVance.
A hairdresser by trade and a storyteller by nature, Mary K never met a stranger. She loved to dance, to laugh, and to share moments both big and small. She adored dogs and found her peace near the James River, especially when surrounded by family and friends.
A celebration of Mary K's life will be held in the new year, at a later date when those who loved her can gather.
Mary K - forever "Miss K"- will be remembered in shared stories, tall tales, familiar laughter, and in the quiet spaces where love remains.
