Martha “Polly” Brankley Sodat, 86, of Hopewell went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday April 16, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Annie Faucette Brankley. She is preceded in death by her husband, Luther H. Sodat Sr.; brothers, James D. Brankley, Willie Lee Brankley, Robert E. Brankley; sister, Adelaide Brankley. Polly graduated from Johnston Willis with a degree in nursing. She retired in 1991 as an Emergency Room Supervisor at John Randolph Medical Center. She served on the Board of Directors of the Hopewell Emergency Crew and was a longtime member of Nazareth Lutheran Church. She was a founding member of the Nazareth Quilters and enjoyed making quilts for the ones she loved. She is survived by her daughters, Ann Sodat Hanford and her husband, Louis “Eddie”, Martha Lynn Staples; son, Luther Sodat Jr. and his wife, Lynn; brothers, Harrell A. Brankley, Henry O. Brankley, Thomas A. Brankley, grandchildren, Ashley Thompson and her husband, Robert, Joshua Staples and his wife, Kristen “Niki”, Hilary Sodat, Jordan Hanford, Luther “Luke” Sodat III; great-grandchildren, Taylor Aldridge, Trevor Aldridge; numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Nazareth Lutheran Church, 1711 Grant Street, Hopewell, Virginia 23860, with visitation to be held one hour prior.
