Lisa Simmons Howerton, 65, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
Born and raised in Matoaca, Virginia, Lisa was the daughter of Helen Simmons and the late Robert "Bobby" Simmons. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, and friend whose kindness touched all who knew her.
Lisa worked at Phillip Morris in the Purchasing Department for 18 years. She retired last year after dedicating 26 years to operating the family business, Matoaca Exxon, alongside her late brother, Steve Simmons. Through her years of service, she became a familiar and cherished presence in the community she loved.
Lisa especially loved spending time at the beach and looked forward each year to family beach vacations shared with her mother, husband, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. These trips created treasured memories that her family will carry with them always.
She is survived by her mother, Helen Simmons; her husband of 43 years, Thomas "Bart" Howerton; her son, Brian Howerton and his wife, Bonnie Howerton; her son, Michael Howerton and his wife, Alexandra Howerton; her grandchildren, David, Clara, and Scottie Howerton; and several beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 3110 Greenwood Avenue, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. A reception will follow in the Christian Activity Center at Mount Pleasant. The family is being served by the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Liver Foundation in Lisa's memory.
