Layman Conard Shreves

Layman Conard Shreves, 78, of Hopewell, VA passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026, surrounded by those who he loved the most. He was born in Sistersville, West Virginia on September 5, 1947 to the late Harold and Emma Lough. Layman was also preceded in death by his four brothers, Bert Shreves, Jr., Robert Shreves, James Shreves, and Norman Shreves.

He moved to Prince George, VA after graduation from high school to pursue what would end up being his lifelong employment at Hercules (now Ashland), retiring in May of 2001. Shortly after his move, Layman met the love of his life, Dolores Burney, whom he married on November 30, 1968.

Layman was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hopewell, VA. He was also a lifetime member of the Hopewell Emergency Crew and Hopewell Moose Lodge. In his spare time, Layman spent countless hours and years coaching recreational basketball, baseball, and softball. He used this opportunity to serve as both a mentor and support to numerous youth. Layman enjoyed bowling on the church league, as well as many other leagues. He could also regularly be seen fishing, playing golf on various courses, and spending time at his beach house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Above all, Layman loved and cherished spending time with his family, including always being a spectator for any and all events that involved his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dolores Burney Shreves; his son, Harold (wife, Melissa, and step-daughter, Sierra McLaughlin) Shreves of Prince George; daughter, Victoria (husband, Sean) McCormick of Chester; his grandchildren, Branwyn McCormick, Berit McCormick, and Ryan Shreves; loyal canine companion, Rosie Shreves; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 W. Broadway, Hopewell, VA 23860. There will be a funeral service on Friday, May 15, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow at Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell, VA.
