Larry Joe "PeeWee" Sprague

Larry Joe "PeeWee" Sprague, age 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Born on October 21, 1948, in West Virginia, Larry moved to Hopewell, Virginia, as a young boy where he lived a life of service to his country and dedication to his family.

Larry attended Hopewell High School and was a part of the Flying Explorers gymnastics team. He and his fellow gymnasts performed at the World Fair in New York. Larry is a graduate of John Tyler Community College.

Larry served his country honorably, enlisting in the United States Army in 1969. He served in Vietnam and Afghanistan. Larry achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and earned many recognitions including the Bronze Star. In between Larry's stints of active duty, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve while working civil service at Fort Lee, Virginia. Larry's service to the United States of America was one of his proudest achievements in his life.

Larry was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 637 in Hopewell. He held nearly every position in the VFW and loved the members as family. He could be found enjoying the many activities at the VFW just about any day of the week. Larry was also a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Moose Lodge 1472.

Larry was a loving father and grandfather to twin daughters, Amanda/Mandy and Michelle/Micki, their husbands, and three grandchildren. If you knew Larry for more than a minute, he would tell you about his daughters and their families. He was so proud of his family and wanted everyone to know.

Larry is survived by his beloved Sandy Baker; his daughters, Amanda Simmons (Jamie) and Michelle Nunnally (Brooks); his three grandchildren, Cole Simmons, Anna White (Ty), and Cooper Nunnally; his brother, Gary Sprague (Sammie); his sisters-in-law, Becky Holdsworth (George), Stephanie Thompson (Allen), and Donna Wheeler (Dwight); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur Sprague and Rose Stevenson; his sister, Sharon "Sue" Sprague Kidd; his brother, Doug Sprague; and his brothers-in-law, Dwight Wheeler and George Holdsworth.

Larry will be deeply missed but will be forever remembered by those who loved him as the "greatest of all time."

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Hopewell Chapel, 820 W. Broadway, Hopewell, Virginia 23860. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will immediately follow at Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell.
