Kermit M. Slayton, 88, of Chester, VA, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, at his home.
Kermit began his life in Penhook, VA, the last of five children of Charlie Slayton and Vivian Divers Slayton. He was predeceased by his father, Charlie Slayton, his mother, Vivian Slayton, and all four siblings, Lena Arrington, Charlie Slayton, Jr., Cardell Bridges, and Willie (Bill) Slayton. He was also predeceased by his wife, Shelby T. Slayton, and daughter, Janet S. Garton. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Slayton; grandson, Scott Garton; wife, Rebecca, and their children Rosie, Wesley, and Wyatt; grandson, Taylor Garton, wife Sara, and their children Lucy and Jonathan; grandson Andrew Garton; and son-in-law Frederick Garton.
Kermit graduated from Franklin County High School and joined the National Guard where he served for two years before joining the Army 806th Engineering Battalion where he served for two more years before his discharge. While in the National Guard, he began his career with Virginia Department of Transportation, where he retired in 1991. During his retirement he enjoyed keeping busy. He was a long-time member of the Chester YMCA, long-time member and parishioner of Ivey Memorial Methodist Church, and long-time volunteer at the local food pantry. Kermit was known for his community involvement in Harrowgate Athletic Association, participating in administration, and coaching baseball and softball.
Kermit will be remembered as an upstanding member of his community, an honest, loyal, hardworking man, whose "word" meant something.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Ivey Memorial Methodist Church immediately following the graveside service, with a luncheon to follow in the fellowship hall. Donations may be made to Ivey Memorial Methodist Church.
