Kay Cotman Patton

Kay Cotman Patton, 64, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving friends and family on Thursday, January 22, 2026. She was born in Hopewell, VA, to the late James M. Cotman, Sr. and Shirley Cotman. She has gone on to heaven to join her loving husband of 36 years, Steven James Patton; her nephew and niece, Jonas and Emily Lambert; and her father-in-law, Robert Patton, Sr. She graduated from Hopewell High School and retired after over 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Hopewell in their Social Services. She was a longtime and devoted member of Wesley UMC in Hopewell. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her faithful daughter, Brenda Jo Young and son-in-law, Johnny Young; granddaughter and greatest joy, Kaylyn Young; her mother-in-law and friend, Mary Patton; her siblings, Kathy and Mark Lambert, Woodson and Debbie Cotman, Karen Spain, James Cotman, Jr, and his wife, Tammy Cotman; brothers-in-law, Robert and Kathy Patton, Bart and Lori Patton; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces; her special friends, Julie Ashmore, Sharla Kirk, Terri Robinson, Sylvia Ward and many others; as well as her social services family. The family wishes to offer special thanks to her "good daughter", Jessica Mayton Williams, Shannon Poitras, Stephanie Griffin, and neighbor, Keith Delbridge. A celebration of life will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Hopewell on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. The service will be performed by Pastor ReNeé Teague, of Wesley UMC, in Hopewell, VA, and Chad Herndon, of New Song Church, in Mechanicsville, VA, and will be streamed from Wesley UMC's website. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for gifts to be made in Kay's name to Wesley UMC, in Hopewell, to continue the ministry that she supported in life.
