Julia T. Powers

Julia T. Powers, 91, of Hopewell, VA, passed away on January 30, 2026. Born in South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Leila Traynham. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers; and two sisters.

Julia was a woman of deep faith and an avid reader of the Bible. She was a 1956 graduate of Montreat Christian College in North Carolina, and taught children the Word of the Lord for 20 years. Julia was a lifetime member of West End Presbyterian Church, where she participated in the church softball club. She also participated in the Senior Olympics, and in her spare time could be found sewing, working with ceramics, or canning food. Julia also loved to bowl and play dominoes. A deeply caring soul, Julia loved her family, her friends, and her God fiercely.

Julia is survived by her husband of 66 years, Floyd Odell Powers; her sons, Mark Alan Powers (Jan) and Stephen Odell Powers (Kimberly); seven grandchildren, Brandy Hockenberry (Brandon), Jonathan "Adam" Mobley, Heather Sanford (Brian), Christopher "Luke" Mobley, Steven Powers (Jenny), Matthew Powers (Lacey), and Jennifer Matthews; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Martin and Betty Goodwin; special friend, Roberta "Bobann" Latta; and her caregiver, Brenda Powers Barbour; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Julia will be held at West End Presbyterian Church, 1600 Atlantic Ave, Hopewell, VA, 23860, on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 11:00am. The family will accept friends one hour prior to the service, at 10:00am. Interment at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the West End Presbyterian Church in memory of Mrs. Powers.
