Joseph C. Hillier passed away October 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love for his family and community. A proud graduate of Thomas Dale High School, Hampden-Sydney College, and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry, Joe began his career serving in the U.S. Navy at the Norfolk Naval Air Station before establishing a family dental practice in Chester, VA, that spanned over 55 years.
A visionary community leader, he helped found both the Chester Jaycees and the Kiwanis Club of Chester, served as the 1985-86 Governor of the Capital District for Kiwanis International, and played a key role in local infrastructure improvements, including the Rt. 10 expansion. Through 53 consecutive years of perfect attendance with the Kiwanis Club, he exemplified unwavering commitment, leadership, and a deep-rooted passion for service.
His vision helped shape Chester's community spaces, including the creation of The Village Green and the Chester YMCA, where he served on the Board of the Directors close to 20 years. Joe also enjoyed running a family plant nursery and sheep farming, always with the help of his beloved family.
Joe and Susanne enjoyed taking river boat cruises in Europe, antiquing, and antique auctions. Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susanne; and their daughters, Kendall (Tracy), Heather (Kent), Ashley (Perry), and Shannan (James); along with his grandchildren, Madeline, Colton, Temple, and Matthew. His love for Hampden-Sydney College, dentistry, Kiwanis, and his home was unwavering. He often credited his alma mater for shaping his values, saying simply, "I am what I am."
A private burial will be held at Olive Hill Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place at St. John's Episcopal Church in Chester, on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM.
