John Vincent O’Connor, Jr., 85, of Hopewell, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 4, 2014. Born and raised in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late John Vincent, Sr., and Margaret Hulton O’Connor. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Marilyn Towne O’Connor. He was an Army veteran, having served in Italy at the end of World War II. He then graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1950. He was a faithful member of St. James Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post # 146. He was employed by U.S. Steel at several locations for 32 years and then as a civilian employee of the Army Corps of Engineers until 1996. He is survived by his three sons, Dennis, Thomas, and Raymond O’Connor; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; sister Carol Greene (Joseph); a nephew and two nieces. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at St. James Catholic Church, Hopewell, VA. Interment will follow with military honors in St. Joseph Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to St. James Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.
