John Arthur Kelly Sr.

John Arthur Kelly, Sr, 83 of Petersburg, Virginia died 23 June, 2013. Mr. Kelly was born 27 November 1929 to Lemuel and Ruth (Holt) Kelly from Oldham, England. His family immigrated to the United States and settled in the Boston, Massachusetts area. Mr. Kelly proudly served in the United States Marine Corp and United States Air Force. He retired from active duty service to our country after 20 years. Mr. Kelly and his family settled in Petersburg in 1966. Mr. Kelly went on to work as a Magistrate for the City of Petersburg and retired from public service in 2001. Mr. Kelly lived a full and rewarding life. Mr. Kelly was a lifetime member of American Legion J. Thompson Wyatt Post 2, Petersburg where he was very active and served as a Past Commander. Mr. Kelly was also a proud member of Fraternal Order of Eagles - Petersburg #882. Mr. Kelly is survived by his brother, Frederick Lemuel Kelly (Denise) from Hudson, Florida. He is also survived by his daughters, Karen Heidorn (Martin) from Chesterfield, VA; Barbara Nitz (Trevor) from Papa, Hungary; Kim Powers (James) from Prince George County, VA and one son, Daniel John Kelly from Palm Springs, CA. Mr Kelly was blessed with 4 grandchildren: Ashley Powers Preskar (Jeff), Kelly Heidorn, Lauren Heidorn and Ian Nitz. He also has one great granddaughter, Ryleigh Heidorn. Mr Kelly is also survived by Eric Lemuel Meakin of Lytham St Annes, England; and Ruth Bertenshaw Brookes (Robert) of Shaw Oldham, England. Mr. Kelly was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Ann Plaisance Kelly, formally of New Orleans, LA and his son, John Arthur Kelly, Jr. A memorial service will be held at American Legion J. Thompson Wyatt Post 2, 820 Winfield Road, Petersburg,VA Wednesday, 26 June at 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday, 27 June at Southlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Birdsong Road in Petersburg, Va at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Legion J. Thompson Wyatt Post 2, marked for Veterans Support Services. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com
