John Henry Carnifax, Sr., passed away on June 11, 2026, while in hospice care in Chesterfield, VA. He was 87 years old.
Born August 13, 1938, in Fenwick, WV, John was the second child born to Austin Jack (Bus) and Beulah Carnifax. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, James Carnifax. John has three children (John Jr., Julie, and Lisa); one daughter in-law, Ann Carnifax; and two sons in-law, Gerald Hamilton and Patrick Stanfield. He has three grandchildren (Sydney, Austin, and Blake); two great-granddaughters (Isla and Callie); and one great-grandson (Rowan). John will be sorely missed by his family, including his sister, Jane Carnifax Martin, of Beckley, WV; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In 1956, John graduated from Crighton High School, near his hometown of Leslie, WV. He relished his time playing high school sports with his buddies. He enlisted in the Air Force shortly after graduation, and traveled to Japan, Korea, and many other places. John married Polly Spitzer of Quinwood, WV, in 1958; they were married for 26 years. Together they moved to Colorado, Florida, and eventually settled in Chester, VA, where they raised their family. John worked for Firestone Tire, in Hopewell, VA, for over 25 years.
When John retired at the age of 55, he eagerly moved back to WV to enjoy the mountains of Greenbrier County. He liked being outdoors, gardening, fishing, and golfing. For many years, John was a devoted caregiver to his aging parents. He was a good son and a good friend to many.
The family would like to express appreciation to Clyde Hicks of Rainelle, WV, for helping with his care these last few years. A private graveside service will be held July 25, 2026, in Craigsville, WV.
In lieu of flowers, those who would like to make a donation may contribute to a charity of your choice or to the Craigsville Cemetery Trust Fund, 653 Bottle Plant Road, Craigsville, WV 26205.
