Joan Allene Harris

Joan "Allene" Harris, 87, of Hopewell, Virginia, passed away on June 19, 2026. Born to the late Ben and Ellen McDonald, she was also preceded in death by her four brothers and six of her sisters.

Allene worked at Allied Chemical and took great pride in her inspection position. In her own words, "The standards have made me much more conscientious and secure in doing my job," which made the newspaper. She was later promoted to an office position and retired in 1999.

In her retirement, Allene loved working with special needs adults at church. She also loved traveling, collecting antiques, shopping with her girlfriends, and having lunches with her sisters. She especially loved spending time with her husband, Mike, also known to her as "Baby Cakes" and "Boo Boo." Above all, Allene was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be deeply missed by all.

Allene is survived by her husband, Michael Harris; daughter, Donna Kay Vaughan (James Vaughan); son, Carlton Donald Walston, Jr.; grandchildren, Dawn Rene (Joe Hunt) and Gina Kathleene (Ander Wade); great-grandchildren, Kaylah Rae (Jesse Foster), Kamerin Rylee, Kileigh Renae, Kolten River, Kenzie Rayne, and Paisley Jo; and great-great-grandchildren, Kynleigh Raelyn and Karter Rylee. On her husband's side, she is survived by children, Michelle Norwood (James Norwood) and Brenda Hendericks (Eric Hendericks); grandchildren, Christian, Christopher, Samantha, Rachel, Sierra, and Moriah; and great-grandchildren, Ella, Jaxx, and Beckett.

A funeral for Allene will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 W. Broadway Avenue. The family will receive friends the night prior from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the funeral home. Following the funeral, Allene will be buried in Sunset Memorial Park.
