Jimmy Ray Kern

Jimmy Ray Kern, 90, of Hopewell, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Born May 15, 1936, in Imboden, Virginia, Jimmy was the son of the late Echol Kern and Lelia Adams Kern. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Wesley Kern, of Michigan, and Jack Kern, of Virginia.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and later in the United States Army while stationed in Korea, where he served as a military vehicle mechanic. Following his military service, he began a career built on dedication, skill, and hard work. He worked for Bridgestone Firestone Textiles before the merger of Honeywell, where he faithfully served as an Industrial Operator for 39 years. In addition, Jim owned and operated Kern Moving Company, through which he faithfully served countless families throughout the community for over 45 years.

Jim also dedicated much of his time to the youth of Hopewell. Through the Hopewell Recreation League, he served as a football, basketball, and baseball coach, mentoring countless young athletes over the years.

Jim's life was a testament to service, sacrifice, and love. Whether serving his country, working to support his family, helping a neighbor, or encouraging a young athlete, he consistently placed the needs of others before his own. Jim was a genuinely kind, generous, and humble man that will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Ann Gibson Kern; sons, Jody Kern, Tim Kern (Shari), and Chad Kern (Sarah); daughter, Gina Potter; grandchildren, Ashli Foster (Frank), Seth Kern (Jenny), Paige Cook (Brandon), Evan Kern and Drayke Kern (Akera); great-grandchildren, Fox Foster, Freedom Foster, and Baby Cook on the way; brother, Ronnie Kern (Jane), of Hopewell; nephew, Randell Kern; and niece, Rhonda Kern LaCombe.

A visitation for Jim will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Hopewell Optimist Club in Jim's memory.
