James Garfield Simmons, 88, of North Chesterfield, VA died February 13, 2026. Born and raised in Raven, VA, he was the son of the late John Austin Simmons and Mandy Pearl Simmons. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a friend to all he met. He retired from Reynolds Metal and enjoyed volunteering at Chippenham Hospital for 23 years in the pre-admission department. He was a member of The City of Refuge Church. A sports enthusiast in every way, he enjoyed attending practices and games for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His support for everyone was endless. His motto for life was, "Live a Little, Love a Lot, be Thankful for what you Got." In addition to his parents, Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by many siblings and his son, Ronald Simmons. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Emogene Simmons; daughter, Karen Harris (Dan); daughter-in-law, Rhonda Simmons; grandchildren, Jessica Carver (Ron), Justin Simmons (Melissa), Lauryn Harris and Dylan Harris; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Kinsley, Canaan, and Ellory; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The night prior, there will be a viewing on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 for friends and family from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children's Hospital of Richmond/VCU.
