James Franklin Payne Sr., 89, of Chester, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Born in Fluvanna County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Walter Daniel and Flora Lee Martin Payne. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and a sister. Mr. Payne was a member of the 45th Infantry “Thunderbird” Army Division. He was a decorated WWII Combat Veteran, wounded in action, and a former POW. Mr. Payne retired as a millwright from DuPont after 44 ½ years. He is survived by his children, James F. Payne Jr. and his wife, Barbara, Gwendolyn G. Phelps, Dale Payne and his wife, Vickie, Dawn P. Garrett and her husband, Mark, and Shawna R. Pfeiffer and her husband, Matthew; their mother, Elizabeth Bush Payne; grandchildren, Sarah, Jason, Adam, Kevin, Ryan and Samantha; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Mikayla, Chase, and Krystalynn; his sister, Elizabeth Lewis; numerous nieces and nephews; and his two labradors, Max and Mindy. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
