James D. "Jimmy" Mayes, Jr.

James D. "Jimmy" Mayes, Jr., 59, of Chester ,VA, passed away unexpectedly on October 8, 2026. He was a native of Petersburg, VA, graduate of Petersburg High School, and dedicated career employee of GFL Environmental.

Jimmy was a man of many passions: work, his pets, music (especially Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top), the Dallas Cowboys, motorcycles, Myrtle Beach, playing poker with friends, and bowling. He ensured that his employers got every bit of their 'dollars' worth of work from him and the employees he managed, to the point that some called him "All Day Mayes."

Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife, Joann D. Mayes; his father, James D. "Bubba" Mayes, Sr. (Donna); his sister-in-law, Jean Dutton; nieces and nephews, Erica White (Will) and Gary Larsen (Melissa); his dogs, Dixie and Sophie, his cat, Lea Lea; extended family; and many treasured friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lewis B. "Berk" Mayes, Sr. and Ethel Wilson Mayes; his maternal grandparents, George and Martha Eunice; his uncle, Lewis B. "Sonny" Mayes, Jr. and aunt Idear Traylor Mayes; brother-in-law, Mark L. Dodson; and his dog, Suzie.

A celebration of Jimmy's life will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Rd., Chester, VA.
