James Waverly Horne III

James Waverly Horne III passed away on September 25, 2026 surrounded by his family. Jay was a devoted husband, father, son, friend, guidance counselor, and church and community leader.

Jay was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on December 6, 1942 to Rev. James Waverly Horne, Jr. and Margaret Cutchin Horne. He grew up in and around Isle of White County, Virginia surrounded by a large and loving extended family. After graduating from Southampton High School, he attended Wake Forest University, and later, the University of Richmond where he graduated with a degree in History. After graduation he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy aboard a carrier during the Vietnam War. Later, he earned a graduate degree in counseling at Virginia State University.

Jay met the love of his life, Lisa Curtis, in 1967. They married on April 26, 1969. After settling in Colonial Heights, Jay began a long and distinguished career in Colonial Heights Public Schools. He served as a history teacher, an assistant basketball coach, and finally, Director of Guidance at Colonial Heights High School. Countless students and teachers benefited from his wisdom, compassion, and sense of humor throughout his tenure there.

Jay was an active member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Colonial Heights, where he served as Senior Warden multiple times. A prolific songwriter, Jay loved singing and praising the Lord and often led worship to the delight of those who heard and sang along with him. Jay epitomized servant leadership and was just as likely to be seen cleaning up the fellowship hall or packing lunches for the homeless as he was leading a vestry meeting or worship service.

Jay committed his life to loving God and loving others. His students, family, and friends will remember his steady, faithful presence in difficult times. He had a heart of compassion for everyone around him and was quick to offer a listening ear or practical help whenever he could.

Jay is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rev. James Waverly Horne Jr. and Margaret Cutchin Horne, as well as his son-in-law Christopher Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Lisa; daughters, Elizabeth Barnes, Molly Bumpas, and Meg Hoffman; sons-in-law, Noel Bumpas and Matthew Hoffman; grandchildren, Allison Barnes, River Bumpas, Jacqueline Barnes, Storm Bumpas, James Hoffman, and Sam Hoffman; as well as sisters, Marcia Mattheson and Joan Cusick.

A memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Colonial Heights, Virginia on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. The family is being served by the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
