James Warwick Henderson, 85, widower of Elizabeth Ann Withers, passed away on August 15, 2013, at his home in Hopewell, Virginia after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 15, 1928, he was the son of the late David Madison Henderson and Alma Leigh Kemp Henderson. Mr. Henderson was raised in Richmond and graduated from John Marshall High School where he was Captain of the Cadet Corp, Company E. He attended VMI and University of Richmond and served our country as a member of the U. S. Army. Mr. Henderson was employed by Bell Atlantic Telephone Company for 35 years spending many years managing the Hopewell office. An avid golfer, he was also very active in the local community. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Hopewell Salt Water Anglers’ Club, Historic Hopewell Foundation, President of the Rotary Club, President of the Hopewell Chamber of Commerce, served on the Board of Directors at Jordan Point Country Club, and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Chamber of Commerce in 1962.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother David Lee Henderson. He is survived by his daughters, Carol H. Peterson (Torsten) and Patricia H. Francis (Michael), and his grandchildren, Karey Elizabeth Williamson, Virginia Elizabeth P. “Ginny” Gum (John), Leslie Jean Peterson, James Thomas “Jay“ Traylor, and Patricia Leigh “Tricia” Peterson. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Anne “Lottie” Gum, and Noah David Gum, his sister in law, Jean W. Gentry (Richard), and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 3 pm at J. T Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Hopewell Chapel.
