On October 10, 1953, he married Hazel Wilson, of Richmond. They shared 69 years together until her passing on January 3, 2023. He and Hazel traveled extensively as they both loved the beaches and Jimmy loved to play golf.

A sports enthusiast, he was very active in the Chesterfield Quarterback League (CQL), first, as a coach and, later, as commissioner for five years, 1979 to 1984. A long-time member of the Touchdown Club of Richmond, Stewart served as its president, 1995-96, and was the long-time treasurer. The Club honored him in 2011 with the Bunkie Trinite Achievement Award, the club's highest honor.
He was also a member of what was once the Downtown Club, serving as its president in 2001-02. He served on the Club's Dudley Award Banquet Committee and helped establish the Bill Dudley Scholarship Foundation, serving on the foundation's Board of Directors.
