Howard Curtis Butterworth, 61, of Hopewell, VA, passed away unexpectedly on July 23, 2015. Born on December 11, 1953, Curtis was predeceased by his father, Harold Alvin “Bully” Butterworth, and his mother, Rosemary Westerman Butterworth. After graduating Hopewell High School in 1972, Curtis graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1976 and the T.C. Williams School of Law in 1978. For almost twenty years, Curtis served the Hopewell community as an attorney and partner in the law firm Eliades and Butterworth. After a successful career in the legal profession, Curtis continued to help people in need as Associate Pastor at Joy Fellowship Church. In 2012, Curtis founded Grace and Peace Ministries, where he devoted his time to the preaching and teaching of the Gospel in the Tri-Cities community and to providing mercy ministry to those in need. At the time of his death, he was a ruling elder at West End Presbyterian Church in Hopewell. He was a former member of the Hopewell City School Board and of the James River Ball Patrons Committee. Curtis had several loves – his family, especially his grandchildren, as well as his beloved four-legged sidekick Kylie. However, he loved none more than Christ Jesus, to whom he devoted all and to whom he owed everything. He is survived by his wife, Donna Rigney Butterworth; two children, Brandon Payton Butterworth (Jessica) and Brooke Ashley Butterworth; grandchildren, Carter Reynoldson Butterworth and Grayson Davis Butterworth; sister, Barbara Butterworth Batts (Phil); aunts, Barbara Westerman Newlon, Audrey Butterworth, Joyce Butterworth, and Joann Butterworth; nieces and nephews, Chris (Sara), Katie (John), Michael (Molly), and Melissa Drouin; many cousins and extended members of the Butterworth family. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 27, 2015, at West End Presbyterian Church in Hopewell. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at West End Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eddie Reed officiating. Interment will be in Appomattox Cemetery.
