Helen Louise Umstead, 81, of Chester, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 19, 1943, to Clarence and Mable Perkins, Helen was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, known for her warmth, compassion, and spirited nature. She was preceded in death by her parents; the love of her life, her husband, William F. Umstead, Jr.; and her sister, Phyllis Richardson.
Helen is survived by her two beloved daughters, JoAnn Akers (Rusty) and Vicky Umstead (John); her cherished grandchildren, Winston (Kellie), Katelyn (Jeff), and Tyler (Savannah); John's children, Ava and Wyatt; several nieces and nephews; and her loyal canine companion, She She.
Helen was a kind and loving woman with a heart of gold. Once she retired from Sears and Roebuck, she spent many years volunteering her time and energy to those in need. From 2008 to 2019, she served with great dedication at The Shepherd's Place, providing comfort and care to those in her community. She was a board member and served as Vice President from 2014-2019. She also was a member of the John Randolph Auxiliary, where she managed the gift shop as a volunteer, always offering a friendly smile to visitors and staff alike.
A faithful member of Powers Memorial Baptist Church, Helen's strong faith was at the core of her life. She loved being active, enjoyed shopping at thrift stores, yard sales, or participating in water aerobics, which kept her energetic spirit thriving. She also had a passion for game shows, always ready to test her knowledge and cheer on her favorite contestants.
Helen's personality was a perfect blend of kindness and feistiness. She was full of spunk and zest for life, making a lasting impression on all who knew her. She will be remembered as a woman who lived with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community.
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 3pm until 5pm at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home - Hopewell Chapel, 820 West Broadway Avenue, Hopewell, VA 23860. A graveside service will be held Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11am, at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens, 11302 Merchants Hope Road, Hopewell, VA 23860.
Helen's spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness and energy.
The family would like to thank niece Jackie Harris and Meagan, Christie, Emily and Laura from At Home Care Hospice for their love, support and care.
