Harley Doane Martin

November 22, 1948 — February 21, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Harley Doane "Donnie" Martin on February 21, 2026. He left this world peacefully, surrounded by family members as he entered eternal rest.

Donnie was born on November 22, 1948, in Halifax, Virginia, the son of the late Sellie William and Emily Catherine Martin.

Known for his kindness, peaceful spirit, and thoughtfulness, Donnie was known by most as the type of friend and neighbor who would "give you the shirt off his back if you needed it." His dedication to others was evident throughout his life. Over the years, he opened up his home to help those who needed shelter and respite in their time of need. For 20 years, he volunteered with the Prince George and Hopewell Rescue Squads, serving his community and neighbors. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Donnie coached recreational league tee-ball, little league, pony league, and Prince George All-star teams, forging life-long friendships with players and their families. He was a former Scout Master for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Troop 910 and served many years as a Deacon in the church. Additionally, Donnie was a Freemason, and former active member of the Prince George Masonic Lodge.

Donnie believed strongly in hard work and earning one's way through life. It was not uncommon for him to work extra hours or days to provide for his family whenever it was needed. He was a highly skilled and respected welder and fabricator. As a member of the maintenance crew at Honeywell, Donnie retired after 35 years of dedicated service. During his tenure, he received numerous safety and attendance awards and mentored young welders, teaching them skills of the trade and passing on knowledge only gained over many years of hard work. He played a key role in guiding his son, Michael, as he started his own career in welding.

Outside of work and volunteering, Donnie enjoyed many simple pleasures. He was an avid woodworker and metal fabricator, often tinkering and creating items for his family and friends at home. He crafted many pieces of furniture that have become treasured family heirlooms. Having grown up on a farm in rural Virginia, Donnie became an enthusiastic gardener at a young age, planting gardens that provided for his family and his friends year after year. Each spring, he looked forward to planting something new to share with loved ones. Golf was one of his favorite sports and he enjoyed watching professional tournaments on TV. He travelled across many states to explore new courses and always looked forward to "chasing golf balls around the course" with friends. After his retirement, he was also active in various local senior golf leagues.

Donnie is survived by his beloved wife of over 49 years, Nancye, of Prince George; his brother, Sellie "SC" (Judy), of Halifax; his son, Michael (Amy), of Chesterfield; his stepson, David (Jamie), of Loudoun; his daughter, Donna (Bryan), of Disputanta; his daughter, Heather (Alex), of Prince George; many deeply loved and cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews; and his cherished puppy, Angel.

Reflecting Donnie's compassionate and caring nature, the family requests that donations in his honor be made to a local animal rescue, such as Ring Dog Rescue, in lieu of flowers.

A celebration of Donnie's life will be held at a future date.
