Gwenneth "Gwen" Ann Newsom

Gwenneth "Gwen" Ann Newsom, 82, passed away on September 28, 2026, surrounded by love from her family. She was born on August 31, 1944, in Scottsboro, Alabama to the Rev. James K. Rodgers and Mildred Mae Green Rodgers. Gwen lived a life defined by strength, love, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to the people she cherished most.

Gwen is survived by her husband, Thomas Lynn Newsom; her daughter, Jennifer Newsom Carpenter; and brother, Jimmy Rodgers. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Gary Rodgers and Dennis Rodgers.

Gwen was a beautiful, strong, kind, and fearless woman with a wonderful sense of humor and a remarkable ability to connect with people. For 58 years, she shared a devoted marriage with her husband and best friend, Thomas, which was built on love, support, and their commitment to stand beside each other through life's adventures and challenges. Gwen was also a devoted mother to her daughter, Jennifer, but she was so much more than a mother. She was a treasured confidante, a constant source of unconditional love, compassion, wisdom, and support. Gwen was always available, willing to listen, and ready to offer encouragement or advice to her family. Her love provided irreplaceable comfort, and she fully embraced life as an adventure without fear.

Throughout her life, Gwen showed that laughter can carry us through difficult moments, and life is meant to be lived with courage and an open heart. She dedicated her career to working with senior citizens by creating and supporting activities and programs that enriched their lives. Her work reflected the compassion, energy, and genuine care for others that came so naturally to her. She also found joy in cooking, gardening, and in any opportunity for adventure. She loved experiencing life, meeting people, and making memories with those she loved. Her wonderful sense of humor and zest for life brought laughter and light to countless moments.

Gwen made certain that her family knew how deeply she loved and cherished them. Her love was unconditional, her presence reassuring, and her impact lasting. She will forever be loved, treasured, and deeply missed by her husband, daughter, brother, and close friends.

A graveside will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell, Virginia 23860. The family will receive friends 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
