Georgia Varena Wood, 95, of South Prince George, VA (after many years in Newport News, VA), passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Lucy Corr Retirement Community in Chesterfield, Virginia. She was cared for by her daughter Janet Harrell Wood from 15 years prior to her passing to the last days of her life. Georgia's life was sometimes very challenging having lost her mother as a young child, having had her two beloved brothers leave her to serve their country in WW2, having endured the deployment of her husband to war four different times in the US Army (WW2, Korea, and twice to Viet Nam), and having lost her daughter April Wood Allmond in 2016. Georgia courageously bore those difficult times, and continued to display resilience as her health and circumstances declined in her later years. She was a survivor. Georgia loved to read, loved gardening, and was an active volunteer with the NCO Wives Clubs and churches that she attended during her life as an Army wife. She very much loved her family, immediate and extended. Above all else, Georgia loved her husband Carl C. Wood, who gave her a wonderful life after a very difficult youth.
Georgia was preceded in death by her loving husband, CSM Carl C. Wood; and daughter, April Wood Allmond (Terry). She is survived by her children, son, Henry Wood (Ben) and her daughter, Janet Harrell Wood; by her grandchildren, Jared Allmond, Corrie McPherson (Jimmy), Georgia Harrell, and Will Harrell (Rebecca); and by her great-grandchildren, Ava Allmond, Abigail Allmond, Gunnar McPherson, Rosslyn McPherson, and Avery Cash Harrell. In addition, Georgia was particularly close to her sister, Marilyn's two daughters, Sue Babcock and Sandy Phillips.
The family will have a private viewing, followed by a graveside service which will be held at 1pm, on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia, with Pastor Lee Woodcock officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) and Turning Point USA (tpusa.com). The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home.
