Gary Lee Simmons

Gary Lee Simmons, of Dinwiddie, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 17, 2025. Born in 1952 and raised in Matoaca, Virginia, Gary was a proud graduate of Matoaca High School and a lifelong Virginian who cherished his roots, his family, and his friendships.

Gary dedicated 37 years of his life to Brenco Bearings in Petersburg, where he built more than just a career-he built a family of coworkers and friends who remained close to him long after retirement. Known as a hard worker and dedicated friend, Gary was always someone people could count on.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Mary Helen Simmons; and his daughters, Lisa Ann Varnier (married to, William D. Varnier II) and Angela Lee Redmond (married to, Sean Redmond). He was a proud grandfather to Julia Elaine Varnier, William D'Arcy Varnier III, and Nathaniel Lee Varnier, each of whom brought great joy to his life.

Gary's passions included bass fishing, collecting and shooting guns, spending weekends at the river, taking trips to mountains and Myrtle Beach, and above all, spending time with his family. He had a special place in his heart for his beloved Maine Coon cats-Mitzy, his first, then Myra and Macy, who will miss him dearly.

He is also remembered fondly by his lifelong friends, Rusty McCombs, Steve Harris, Billy Nimmo, and Robert Poarch, who shared in his adventures, stories, and steadfast loyalty.

Gary was preceded in death by his loving father, Delmar Ray Simmons and Pete Walker, Mary's cousin-in-law, who was married to Elizabeth Walker.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Southlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a cause close to Gary's heart.

Gary will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His legacy lives on in the stories shared, the values he passed down, and his love for family and friends.
