Fred Askew Simmons, 80, of Hopewell, passed away on June 8, 2013. He was the son of the late Harry J. and Leone Askew Simmons; and was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret S. Mayo; and two brothers, Linwood E. and Paul J. Simmons. Mr. Simmons retired from Hercules after 42 years of service where he held the office of President for the local United Steel Workers Union. He was a longtime member of Sycamore United Methodist Church, and was also a member of the Prince George Ruritan Club, Prince George Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #115, and the Hopewell/Prince George Crime Solvers. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara S. Simmons; a daughter, Denise S. Duesing; one son, Fred A. Simmons, Jr.; three grandchildren, Ryan and Jordan Amick, and Elsa Simmons; two great-grandsons, Kruz and Karson Amick; four brothers, John A. Simmons and wife, June. Harry A. Simmons and wife, Velta, Thomas O. Simmons and wife, Billie, and Joseph E. Simmons and wife, Jackie; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Sycamore United Methodist Church in Prince George, with the Reverends Pat and Gibby Elder, officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George.
