Pomplun, Florence Ellen Starks, of Chester, Virginia, peacefully concluded her 95 year journey through life on Thursday, June 27, 2013. The younger of two daughters, she was born September 5, 1917 to the late Albert Edgar and Florence Barbara Starks in Buffalo, New York. On July 3, 1937, Florence married Burton Rudolph Pomplun, with whom she shared 50 loving years, until his passing on July 5, 1987 in Albany, New York. She was also predeceased by her sister, Ethel Starks Hollstein, who died early in life at the age of 44. While living in Albany, New York, Florence volunteered at the Albany Institute of Art and Albany Medical Center. After moving to Virginia in 1989, she spent her free time volunteering for numerous organizations, such as Blandford Cemetery, CHASM, Chester Clothes Cottage, Chesterfield Public Libraries, Chesterfield Police Department, as well as McGuire VA Medical Center, The Adult Literacy Program and the Hopewell Health Department. She was an avid knitter, painter, and seamstress and loved to watch the birds. Florence is survived by her three children, Donald Ray Pomplun of San Ramon, California; Linda Ellen Pomplun Wynne with husband, Albert James, of Chester, Virginia; and Richard James Pomplun with wife, Cathy, of Disputanta, Virginia. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Elizabeth Pomplun Wynne Chandler with husband, Jason; Rebecca Ellen Wynne; Erin Pomplun Woolley with husband, Brad; Lauren Louise Wynne; and Lydia Leigh Pomplun; and three great-grandchildren, Riley Pomplun Chandler, Liam Sanders Chandler and Caitlin Leigh Woolley, two nephews; Brian Hollstein of New Canaan, Connecticut and Terry Hollstein of Bend, Oregon. A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Friday, July 5th at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 110 North Union Street, Petersburg, Virginia, with The Reverend Rick Greenwood officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service. A graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 8th at Memory Gardens Cemetery & Memorial Park, Colonie, New York, located in the Peace section of the cemetery. Florence was independent, kind and loved life, but most of all, she has been a loving and wonderful mother to her three children.
