Ernest James Hughes, Jr., of Hopewell, VA, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025. He was born January 7, 1942, in Hopewell, VA, to the late Ernest J. Hughes, Sr. and Martha Emerson Hughes. He was preceded in death by his son, Ernest J. Hughes III. Ernie is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Judith T. Hughes; his brother, Charles E. Hughes (Betty); and a host of other family members and friends.
He graduated from Hopewell High School with the class of 1961. He then graduated from Old Dominion Technical Institute in 1964. He worked at Allied Signal, now Honeywell, for 40 years as Principal Engineer of Instrumentation Engineering. He was a member of First Christian Church of Hopewell, VA, assistant Boy Scout Leader at First Methodist Church, Hopewell, VA, for many years, and received his Wood Badge Training from Boy Scouts of America. He was also a member of Moose Lodge 1472 Hopewell, VA. Ernie collected coins, trains, and guns. He enjoyed country music, hunting quail with his German short hair dogs, spending time at his second home on Hatteras Island, where he enjoyed salt water fishing for many years, as well as fresh water fishing at York River Private Club Pond. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
The family will receive friends at his visitation on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 11:00am to 12:00pm, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 12:00pm. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Hopewell Memorial Post 146 - Raise the Roof Fund, in memory of Ernie: 217 East City Point Rd., Hopewell, VA 23860, or Shriners Hospitals for Children, P.O. Box 1525, Ranson, WV 25438.
